Great day on the Louisiana Marsh!

I had a great day on the Louisiana Marsh today with Kyle from Houston. Expectations were high due to the great weather forecast. We had light winds, clean water and tons of sun. The fish have been cold as of late due to the cold fronts we have been getting every other day but with the good sun heating up the flats it was only a matter of time before the monster redfish showed back up. Kyle started fly fishing about a year ago and impressed me with his casting for only picking up the sport a few months back. The redfish and black drum were suspended in about 3 feet of water and you could see their orange glow from a few hundred feet away making them easy targets. Kyle and I started off the day landing a dozen nice redfish in the 7-12 pound range which was a good intro for him as it was his first time fly fishing the Louisiana marsh. After we messed around with them and had a quick bite to eat I told Kyle we needed to go step up to the big leagues and go look for some monsters and oh did we find them. From 12:30 to 4:30 I don’t think Kyle ever had time to put his fly back in his hand. He was getting shot after shot at 25-40 pound redfish and black drum, it was almost like a shooting gallery out there! We ended up boating 8 redfish over 25 pounds the second half of the day with two absolute monsters that weighed in at 30 and 33 pounds and I can’t tell you how many other fish ate the fly that we didn’t hook and we must have broken at least another half dozen big reds off. Kyle was hooked up to a 25 lb fish at one point and there were soo many fish around the boat he told me to pick up a rod and catch one. So I grabbed a rod and picked the biggest redfish I saw and got him to eat the fly, the fish ended up being 33 pounds and Kyle and I had a monster double header. This is a testament to what we can accomplish as fly anglers in the pristine Louisiana marsh. The weather had given us a bad run for a few weeks but things are starting to stabalize. We are getting consitent shots at big redfish and black drum over 20 pounds every day. The water in the Louisiana marsh is super clean right now making it great for sight fishing. We have landed a bunch of fish in the 20-40 pound range over the past couple weeks and more redfish and drum are showing up in the marsh in between cold fronts. Tight lines!

Great fly fishing

The last 3 days of fishing has been spectacular to say the least here in Louisiana. We landed 7 redfish over 25 pounds on fly. The biggest being a 29 pound fish today, one black drum that weighed 46 pounds on fly and tons of other smaller fish in the 7-15 pound range. We have had a bunch of shots at big fish and I can’t wait to get back at it tomorrow. The weather has stabalized a little and the fish are starting to act right again. Tight lines

BoldWater and Saltyshores

We snuck a half day trip in before Derek Redwine from BoldWater and Sam Root from Saltyshores had to be at the airport.

After a big hearty breakfast at Penny’s and picking up our Po Boys for lunch we were off to the Louisiana Marsh. The wind was still honking pretty good but we persevered. Both Derek and Sam got some nice redfish on fly. Sam shot a lot of incredible video and pictures. I’m excited to see how it comes out.

Before it was time to pack it in and get these guys to the airport Derek said he would pole me up the next bay. It didn’t take long to find a victim, at first I thought it was a decent redfish siting on the point. As I fired off the fly a big tail hit the surface, and a couple strips and an enormous Black Drum face engulfed my fly. I think Sam got the bite on video. After that we took some pictures and headed for the barn.

Derek and Sam said the check in at the airport was quick and painless. The next few days it looks like I will have some good weather for my charters.

Back at it again today on the Biloxi Marsh. Another day of nice conditions, a little breezier today then the past 3 but we still found a ton of fish. We went to the outside today to go search for some big redfish and started off by catching a few nice 6-12 pound fish on fly. We were throwing a purple and tan cran fly that I have been tying for the past few years and the fish were jumping all over it. After we messed around with the little fish we fished some deeper shore lines to look for the big boys. We got 2 shots at big redfish today and one was a freaking stud. The fish was tailing in about 2 1/2 ft of water and we could see him from a ways off. When we got closer I could tell he was a huge fish, I estimated him to be between 35-40 lbs. Craig made the shot and the fly landed 2 ft in front of the fish. The fish started to track the fly and then it all went wrong. My pushpole hit and oyster and made a loud screetch and the fish bolted, oh well. We still had a great day on the water landing 14 redfish on fly and one monster 25 lb black drum. I’m back out on the water again tomorrow to do some fun fishing. Tight Lines!

We had another great day on the water with Steve and Markus. The day started slow and ended real good. We landed 7-9 fish in the 26″-32″ range while fly fishing. The Louisiana water was clean with tons of fish. We found them schooled up in shallow ponds backing down shorelines flushing shrimp and minnows out of the mud. Pretty cool sight, wish I could have taken pics but I was poling. Around 3 pm we were poling a deeper shore line and got 4 shots at fat 25 to 35 pound redfish. Steve put the fly where it needed to be to three of those fish and as soon as the fly hit the water the fish came over and ate the crap out of the crab fly before steve could get tight to his fly line and all three of the fish spit the fly out before he could get the strip strike, bummer! Still cool to see those big reds. Back at it again thursday and friday. Call me if you are ready to go!

Louisiana Redfishing continues to produce! Fly Water Expeditions had another great day on the water with Dave and Gloria from California. They landed 8 redfish on fly despite the limited visibility from the clouds.Big redfish of the day was a 14 pound fish and everything else was 5-8 pounds. At it again tomorrow. Tight lines

Redfish and Fly Fishing, Hopedale

Fly fishing for redfish, Today started at Penny’s Cafe in Violette, Louisiana. We had a great breakfast and picked up sandwiches for the day and it was off to fish for redfish. The weather man called for 5-15 knot winds with tons of sun. If you added the 5+15= 20 he would have got the wind right and we had scum sky (clouds) for most of the day. We launched out of Hopedale, LA in hopes to go look for some bigger redfish on the outside. The clouds weren’t going to help but we went anyways. The water was high and pretty clean, we started seeing fish right away. I had Jeff and Bob today and they were ready to sight cast to some nice redfish on fly. We got into the small fish early with the fish ranging from 8-10 pounds and they were feeding heavily on the outgoing tide. We put 6-7 fish in the boat in the first two hours of the day. As we got a little sun we went further out and got some nice fly fishing shots at fish in the 25 pound range and landed 5 fish that were 13-17 pounds with one double header which included the big fish of the day. We ended up with 12 redfish on fly today and the big fish are going to continue to move in.

We fished the 10 weight G. Loomis one piece Crosscurrent Pro 1 with a Tibor Riptide reel. A great setup for the bigger redfish, this makes it easier to thrown the big crab flies we throw at these beasts. Back at it again tomorrow and monday. Tight lines!
