The Louisiana marsh is an incredible place to sight fish for red fish of all sizes. Most people that think about coming to Louisiana to fish for these monsters believe that it is a fall/winter season game but the reality is that these monster fish are sight fishable on fly and light tackle gear year round when the conditions are right. These monster red fish…….

in the 20-40 lb class invade the marsh in certain areas all the way through the summer months and give anglers numerous opportunities to throw at them until the next fall. Summer time red fishing consists of more top water action with water temps heating up and fish being more aggressive on the surface. Take advantage of these opportunities…….

After returning from the Florida Keys and back in Louisiana for a few weeks, the fly fishing in the Louisiana marsh has been very good and there are a variety of species being caught including BIG jack crevelle, and even a few cobia!!! The interior duck ponds are starting to grow aquatic grass which means the water clarity in clean and there are a ton of orange floating red fish for fly and light tackle anglers to throw at. The cool thing about Spring…..

is that as the water temps heat up different species invade our estuaries making for neat opportunities to sight fish these migratory fish. There only few things better then watching school after school of 15-20 lb jacks swim down a shore line and crush top water plugs and flies!!!

So I have had Tomonori and Daiski from Japan for the past three days out on the Louisiana marsh. These guys traveled around the globe to come fly fishing and they have hit it big so far. Weather was tough the first two days so we were limited to A LOT of blind casting which is not normally what we do but it paid off with big numbers of slot reds. The first day we even got a Louisiana Grand slam all on fly which includes the red fish, trout, black drum, and flounder, the only thing we left out was the sheeps head but we landed a nice one on the second day. Today was a bit different, we finally had some sun!! Even though the wind was still blowing pretty good we could finally sight fish and we got into a bunch of monster red fish!! Yes they are still around…….

and we capitalized on them today…. These guys are having a blast and are looking forward to their final two days on the water.

Spring is in the air here in the Louisiana Marsh. The air temps are warming, the wind is picking up and the red fish are moving into their back water duck ponds. We have had the most extreme low water this past week along with the highest its been so far in 2012. It confused the fish for a day or so but they have started their transition into the interior marsh. With water levels rising due to the strong south east winds we will have to concentrate on the small creeks, ponds and interior bays this time of the year, it is a good change from our winter time patterns. We have….

also had shots at some monster gar which actually put up a great fight. Looking forward to the warmer weather and red fishing to continue to heat up.

With cloud cover and wind being the daily theme over the past few weeks we decided to put the fly rods down and go after these monster Louisiana red fish with conventional tackle and mirror lure she dogs!! As a full time fly fishing guide is is great to mix things up once in a while and watch one of these big fish come up and crush a top water plug… We had perfect conditions to……

do this today with overcast and warmer then normal conditions for February. Top waters are a great search bait when you know there are fish in the area. They certainly did the trick today putting double digit fishing in the boat and a few over 20 lbs to top it off!!!

Well Kesley almost got her name in the world record books today for a womens world record red fish on fly. The current record for 16# tippet is 26.5 lbs and this monster Louisiana red fish was just ounces shy of breaking that mark. We had overcast conditions which……

made it tough for sight fishing but the wind wasn’t too bad and the water was just clean enough to see these monster red fish floating on top making for a better sight fishing opportunity. We had an incoming tide which was bringing the fish in from deeper water and we had a number of shots at these size fish before we hooked up and man it was a relief when we did. We were on a time crunch due to flight times for Kesley and Wade to fly back to California, we had to leave to head back to the ramp by 12:30 and we hooked this fish at 12:15. Perfect timing and what a way to end a trip!!

It is really cool to see 40+ pound black drum and 30+ pound red fish tailing in a foot of water, this is why we go out there to see situations like this!!!

Whoo, we haven’t been blessed with the best weather the past week on the Louisiana marsh making it a bit tough for guiding fly fishing trips. Even though we have been grinding the weather out, there are tons of red fish as long as we have an opportunity to see them. When conditions are tough there are still tons of things to do in New Orleans and with Mardi Gras in session things are a mad house in the city!! With the conditions unable to fish today and the weather outlook getting a bit better later in the week……

we had the opportunity today to have some FRESH Louisiana oysters right off the boat, they were incredible and an attestant to how well the oyster growth is after the oil spill. There is honestly nothing better then home grown Louisiana sea food and of course the incredible fly fishing we have out in the marsh!!
