North Platte Lodge before the Drake Film Awards!

Well I was invited to fish the North Platte River in Alcova Wyoming with my good friend Trent Tatum who owns the North Platte Lodge and Grey Reef Fly Shop. I had a few days to fish before I had to be in Denver for The Drake Film Awards which I had a video submitted in and I was going to take advantage of it. Trent said the hopper fishing was going off and as many people know the North Platte is know for some monster fish. We floated the river for two days and caught some really nice fish, when you go to the North Platte an average fish is 18-20 inches which in the trout world is huge. We caught a ton of those and also put some mid 20′s inch fish in the boat all on hoppers and streamers which was really cool because you get to watch every take! Trent has a beautiful lodge that sleeps 8 and has 8-10 guides fishing for him throughout the year. Alcova is 30 miles outside of Casper which is where you can fly into or you can also fly into Denver and drive up. Trent runs a tight ship over there along with his wife Kathryn and there awesome yellow lab Ally. It is a great place to relax and catch some truely monster Rainbow’s, brown’s, cut throats and cutbows. Tight Lines!

Manhattan charter with redfish on fly

Had Ron from Manhattan on the boat today. We had decent conditions and a ton of fish. We put a few 5-10 pound red drum in the boat and ended the day with a hog, 28 pound redfish on fly.

Tough flyfishing for redfish

Monday 10/26 was a tough day on the water. I was fishing with the same group from the past three days and the wether turned from ok to worse. We had strong winds and no sun. We Launched out of Delacroix, LA and fish the interior marsh in a little shallower water because that is what the conditions forced us to do. We had a half day to make it happen so we went right to a few of my best shallow flats. The fish were there tailing and backing down the shorelines but they weren’t acting the way they had been for the past three days, they were finikey. The water in the marsh was gin clear and we were getting decent shots but the fishing gods weren’t with us today. We hooked seven redfish, all nice ones between 7-12 pounds. The only problem was that they all got off after the hook set. The fish were nipping at the fly and getting them close to the outside of the mouth and when they would get in the grass the hook pulled every time. That’s why they call it fishing, not catching! Still a great day on the water with two awesome anglers who got a chance to fish the Louisiana Marsh for the first time.
